Scholarships, Work Exchange, and Fellowships

**All accepted applicants, including financial aid recipients, are responsible for personal expenses, some food, studio materials and supplies, and all transportation.

FINANCIAL AID

All accepted applicants are awarded a Craigardan scholarship which covers more than half of the weekly residency fee. For 2024 the award amount is $700 per week, with thanks to the generosity of our donors and grantors.

PLEASE NOTE that all fellowship awards are provided in addition to the scholarship award.

CRAIGARDAN SCHOLARSHIPs

In order to ensure that residencies are affordable for everyone, applicants may choose to apply for work exchange (WE) which can cover an additional $200-$300 per week of the residency fee at the equivalent rate of $20 per hour. WE Residents select to work either 10 or 15 hours per week in exchange for the residency fee reduction. WE duties include helping on the farm, in the kitchen, in the farm store, or with cleaning. This opportunity provides us with help on campus, connects residents with the larger community, teaches skills, and makes the residencies even more affordable.

Please note that all residents, including WE residents, are responsible for travel, any materials and studio costs, and any additional food costs.

To be considered for WE: select the option on the application form and include details of your interest in the letter of intent. After submitting a residency application, WE applicants will receive a survey to determine fit, experience, and needs. A limited number of WE opportunities are available each summer, and not all WE applicants will be awarded work exchange.

Please note that WE can take a significant amount of time away from one’s residency and time-management is key - we highly recommend requesting the minimum amount of time in WE possible to meet your financial needs. Be aware — this is real (hands-on, physical) work, not desk work.

WORK EXCHANGE

FELLOWSHIPS

The Harvest Plate Fellowship is a 3-4month fellowship (fully funded residency) for ceramicists who want to contribute to Craigardan’s annual fundraiser, while receiving ample time and space to create their own work.  The fellowship covers all materials and firings.  The Harvest Plate Fellow is required to produce the equivalent of 150 plates for the annual September benefit event, Dinner in the Field, a delicious community celebration of the farm, the food, and the plate.   The event punctuates a season’s worth of farming and thoughtful preparation while highlighting the region’s makers - potters, growers, chefs, cheesemakers, craftsmen, and many others.  Funds raised at the event benefit Craigardan’s support of artists through its programming. Potters and chefs are welcome to submit a proposal to work together, or we will select artists for these roles.  Our goal is to create an experience for the event guests that is wholly in-and-of this place:  seasonal ingredients from our farm and partner farms, artistry in its preparation from our culinary program, and service on pottery designed and produced in our studio.

Requirements:

  • ability to prioritize tasks and work independently and efficiently; access to studio staff and assistance is limited

  • must be able to safely lift 50 lbs and perform moderate physical labor

  • competence in ceramic studio processes and use of equipment including glaze-making and the firing of kilns

  • ability to meet the deadline to produce 150 finished pieces, including firings, within 3 months

  • a BFA or BA with a concentration in ceramics, an extensive pottery apprenticeship, or equivalent experience

  • interest in the intersection of food, farming and art

To be considered for this fellowship: select the option on the application form and include an explanation of interest and applicable skills in the letter of intent. Images of your work should include examples of functional table ware, including plates.

HARVEST PLATE FELLOWSHIP

The Teaching Fellowship is available to applicants who wish to share their knowledge and skills with the public while in-residence.  The fellowship is open to any artist or scholar whose teaching proposal is applicable to Craigardan’s mission and place. Interested artists and scholars must submit an application with a specific course or workshop proposal or be invited as a visiting instructor.  The accepted candidate will have a strong interest in community education and a desire for further collaboration with program participants as well as the local community.

Awardees receive a $1000 fellowship toward the cost of a (minimum) two-week residency. Teaching fellows offer a multi-session class on a topic relevant to the resident’s area of expertise. Teaching Fellowships are highly competitive and up to four are awarded each year. We welcome applications from artists and scholars at any stage of their career. Fellows will be selected based on merit and the strength of their course proposal by a jury of professional artists and educators.

To be considered for this fellowship: select the option on the application form and submit a supporting document with details on a class proposal in addition to the letter of intent and other required supporting materials. The class proposal should highlight your expertise and include a full description of what course participants could expect. Public classes at Craigardan are generally 2 hours long on Tuesday or Thursday evenings and run for two or more weeks. Teaching fellows are expected to teach a multi-session course with one session per week while in residence. Fellows will receive staff assistance in refining proposals and designing the final class offering.
