Sip & Slump
You’ve probably heard of Sip & Paint, a popular social art class where students sip on their favorite beverage while following an instructor to recreate, step by step, a painting. We’d like you to join us at The Mill on Thursday, July 30th for our first ever Sip & Slump in collaboration with Craigardan. While we like the idea of a social art class, rather than follow the leader, we’ll guide you to help unleash your own creativity and go wild with clay.
This evening we will be exploring the work of artist Jillian Mayer, whose sculpture series Slumpies are featured at The Mill. These large scale interactive sculptures were designed to support the human body as it interacts with technology. Each of the sculptures in the gallery began as a lump of clay which was formed into a 'maquette', a model for the final piece. This evening we will each explore our own lump of clay to create our own model for an unrealized large-scale sculpture.
Don’t worry, you won’t be on your own, the program is in collaboration with Craigardan, and you will be guided by ceramicist Julia Chai.Chai is a current Craigardan intern and a Northern California based artist who received an MFA in Ceramics from Cranbook Academy of Art in 2025.

Julia Chai, 2026 Resident Intern. Julia is a Northern California-based artist, maker of objects, and an architect of experiences. After receiving her MFA in Ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2025, she has explored working within the intersections of design, creative consulting, and community building. Julia is driven by the process of making - not just of objects, but of experiences that spark connection and a sense of place. She enjoys the quiet labor of meaning-making and finds excitement in connecting the dots between disparate ideas. Julia's life and work are an intertwined pursuit; she values the structure of a refined process but leaves room for the unexpected.
