Prepare for Your Residency
What’s next
Thank you for submitting your forms and completing Next Steps.
We’re so glad you’ll be joining us in-residence this year — and summer is right around the corner. This page will help you prepare in the weeks ahead. From here you can make travel arrangements with staff, pay your residency balance, learn more about studio spaces, and read through the handbook again to help you plan.
**REMEMBER:
We’re here to help you. Please carefully read the information that we provide online, in the Residency Handbook, and in the studio PDFs below. If you have additional questions, concerns, or need clarification, please email program@craigardan.org.
RESIDENCY BALANCE PAYMENT
The balance of your residency fee is due 60 days prior to the start of your residency. Pay the balance of your residency fee anytime by clicking the link below and using the “quantity” button to select the number of weeks you’ll be in residence. If you have been awarded a full fellowship, there is no need for a balance payment. If you have any questions with checkout, please give us a call at 518-242-6535. If your balance is not paid as we approach the 60 day mark, we will send you a direct invoice.
TRAVEL ARRANGEMENTS
If you plan to arrive by bus or train and need to arrange pickup/drop off with Craigardan staff, please use the button below to pay the $40 flat fee (covers pick up and drop off). Once we receive your payment, we’ll reach out with confirmation and scheduling details. Note: this payment is refundable if your travel plans change.
Please arrange station transportation with staff at least two weeks prior to your arrival — with our small staff we cannot accommodate last minute plans.
If you do not need transportation from us, but haven’t made your own arrangements yet, now is the time! Please plan to arrive at Craigardan between 2pm and 4pm the first Monday of your residency. More information on arranging travel is found in the Residency Handbook.
RESIDENT HANDBOOK
This is a great time to re-read the resident handbook. It will answer most of your questions and help you prepare and pack for your time in the Adirondacks. Also take a minute to review our Frequently Asked Questions Page.
Think about what you’ll need to bring with you for your studio practice. Do you need to ship a box of materials ahead of time? Do you need to bring any equipment or have questions about what is included in your space? The links below will help you prepare.

REQUIRED ITEMS TO BRING
ACTIVATING THE PROMISE
Deceptive land sales and broken treaties enabled non-native settlers to establish homesteads in this region which include Craigardan’s 320 acres. In the early 1800s, Manoah Miller set out to create a 3000+ acre settlement here which included a farm, forge, sawmill, and kiln. In the late 1800s, the Adirondack Park was born, and this homestead and the land was divided and sold off among family or neighbors. It has since remained in private hands, surrounded by state lands.
However, these lands belong to the Kanienʼkehá:ka people. And although not much of the Miller settlement remains, we are reminded of their presence here and are still shaped by that history. As we come to terms with our own presence on Kanienʼkehá:ka land, and as we develop a deepened understanding of place, we allow this understanding to inform our collective work and to guide our path forward. Tending to the land and the water; creating a shared space where all are welcome and supported; opening this land back up to the Kanienʼkehá:ka people; and gathering together each year with our community to eat, give thanks, and tell stories around the fire are a few ways in which we are working towards activating our acknowledgements and honoring the past while being mindful of the future.
Craigardan values equality and justice across all human and environmental domains. We do not discriminate on any basis. We encourage applications from people of color, women, and LGBTQIA+ artists and scholars. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us at program@craigardan.org.
