As our new campus grows and the buildings are completed, this page is updated with the most recent information.

Visual, multi-media, and place-based artists have 24/7 access to flexible studio spaces appropriate for their work. Artists are encouraged to exchange ideas and engage with the creative energy of the staff and residents, explore the surrounding Adirondack region, and share their knowledge and artwork with the local community.

Our current multi-media arts studio is temporarily located in the new Applebarn on the main campus. Once the new Studiohouse is completed in 2028, we will have a beautiful new, custom, universally accessible, year-round multi-arts studio building. In the meantime, this sheet details the information you’ll need to know about the current arts studio.

Sited on the main campus, the beautiful new Applebarn has large glass doors on the first floor with views out to the landscape, with plenty of fresh air and ventilation. Built from locally harvested and milled timbers, it is a warm and inviting structure with a heated concrete floor. The second floor studios (2) have a wood floor, pine walls and ceiling, and a window that lets in northern light.

There is no running water or bathroom inside the Applebarn. We use a simple and effective bucket system at the outdoor spigot for clean and waste water. As with all studios, drying time can be tricky depending on the time of year and the weather. We have fans to assist when needed. The Applebarn is a 30 second walk to the bathrooms. 

The first floor of the barn is communal gathering space, public presentation space, and library. The second floor of the barn has two semi-private studio spaces and a private office space. The studios do not lock, but the office does, and we can store any equipment for you as needed.

Each studio space is approximately 10’x12’. Artists can arrange their space according to their work needs with access to: 

• a work table and chair

• A wood divider wall for hanging, mounting works-in-progress, etc. 

• Overhead and Clip lights

• Simple hand tools and power tools (located at the farm)

• Outlets

• Drop cloths

• Easel Stand - 33"D x 21"W x 69"H

• art supply shelving with miscellaneous donated supplies available for use (brushes, sketch pads, pastels and charcoals, etc.)

Artists must bring their own:

• Materials and tools

• Additional Easels if needed

• Push pins, tacks, command strips, painters tape etc..

• headphones for listening to music while in the studio

Purchasing / Shipping Materials:

You are welcome to ship personal materials and supplies to Craigardan in advance of your residency. There is a well-stocked hardware store in Elizabethtown, but no art supplies are available within the region. Shipping or transporting all materials, supplies, and artwork home is your responsibility. Personal items and artwork may not be left behind. If you bring it in or make it here, you must take it with you when you leave! If you wish to donate artwork for permanent indoor or outdoor installation, please speak with staff in advance. 

Your Studio Experience:

An arts residency at Craigardan is for experienced independent artists. This means that you know how to:

• Make work independently in the studio

• Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe studio environment

• Adhere to the posted rules of a community studio

• Ask for help. 

You will receive a brief studio orientation upon arrival and all residents are required to share studio responsibilities including daily clean up. If you have studio specific questions or need help, please reach out to staff.

Access to other spaces, materials, mediums:

Your assigned studio space is your private location to work, but it does not need to be the only space that you work in – we encourage you to spend time outdoors, take courses in other media, explore the property, get your hands in the soil and in the clay studio, and take time to wite, think, cook, and collaborate.
