As our new campus grows and the buildings are completed, this page is updated with the most recent information.

In 2027, the primary work space for writers and scholars is in the individual artist cabins. Once the new Studiohouse is completed in 2028, we’ll have a beautiful new, custom, year-round studio building with individual, private, soundproof writing studios. In the meantime, this page details the information you’ll need to know about the current writing spaces.

The beautiful individual artist cabins are 14’x10’ with large glass sliding doors facing the view and a small window providing plenty of fresh air and cross-ventilation. Built from locally harvested and milled timbers, they are warm and inviting spaces. There is no running water inside the cabins, but they are a sited right Nextdoor to the Mainhouse with bathrooms and the kitchen.

Each cabin work space has:

• a writing table and chair

• A desk light and overhead light

• A small fan

• An outlet

• **reminder: wifi does not reach the artist cabins but is available in the Mainhouse, Kilnhouse, and Applebarn

In addition to the cabin writing spaces, residents have access to a variety of locations to switch up their work day, find new views, or be around others. Writers will often work from the Kilnhouse table, the Applebarn first floor library couches, the front porch of the Farmhouse (at the farm), or at a table in the Mainhouse. These are temporary work spaces (like sitting in a cafe!), and we ask you not to leave your items behind from one day to the next, or set up a permanent work space in these locations for the duration of your residency.

Purchasing / Shipping Materials:

You are welcome to ship personal materials and supplies (books!) to Craigardan in advance of your residency. Shipping or transporting all materials, supplies, and artwork home is your responsibility. Personal items and artwork may not be left behind. If you bring it in or make it here, you must take it with you when you leave. However, we certainly welcome book donations to our permanent library!

Your Studio Experience:

A residency at Craigardan is for experienced independent artists and scholars. This means that you know how to:

• work independently with unstructured time in your studio space

• Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe studio environment

• Adhere to the posted rules of community spaces

• Ask for help. 

Access to other spaces, materials, mediums:

Your assigned studio space is your private location to work, but it does not need to be the only space that you work in – we encourage you to spend time outdoors, take courses in other media, explore the property, get your hands in the soil and in the clay studio, and take time to wite, think, cook, and collaborate.
